As I just completed my 31st move, this one should have been the easiest, but it was probably the worst...and drug out for 3 weeks.
I knew better. My second worst move was also, just a couple miles down the road.
What happens with a short move, is we tend not to rent the Uhaul or hire movers. We make 300 million trips back and forth loading and unloading our vehicles.
Hire movers if you can. If you can't afford to or just don't want movers in your home, get yourself a Uhaul and pack that thing up and move everything in one shot.
I also failed at my preparation. I did not really have an official move date, so I tried to pack up stuff I didn't think I would be using. I tried....I thought I was doing good, but in reality, there was SO much stuff I missed, especially in the spare bedroom.
Start your prep in your spare bedroom, or basement. The wastelands in our homes where we store things that we don't see for YEARS, contains a lot of items that it is just time to let go of. Get a dumpster if you have to.
Another thing I learned, is to ask for help. I hate asking for help when it comes to myself, but ask for help. Let people help you! Especially with the big things.
Try to focus on one room at a time the best you can. Once you start seeing real progress it helps you feel more accomplished.
Be prepared to change your address! Here is the important list:
United States Postal Service
Secretary of State
Insurance provider
Your financial institutions
Employer
Healthcare provider
Utility provider
Internet provider
Amazon and any Amazon subscriptions
Box style subscriptions (BoxyCharm, BarkBox etc)
Being real, I listed those in the order of being the most responsible adult- I personally changed my Amazon first.
Also, take the time to label your boxes with a sharpie and communicate about items needing special care.
Plan on moving in 2025? Give me a shout, I am happy to help you find a place to call home.
